Overall, I see a fair bit of potential with Bugbears, though they certainly shine within certain niches. So you can keep all of the benefits that actual reach weapons get with Polearm Master, while still grabbing a shield for extra AC (and youвЂ™ll probably have a decent AC, since your race gives you a Dex bonus.) So a good take if you want to build around that. You can even get the benefit of Polearm Master with a non-reach weapon if you pick a spear, ( due to the recent changes in the Errata, spears benefit from Polearm Master despite not having reach). Moreover, you can act like a polearm user even with regular weapons that donвЂ™t have reach. If you go for a polearm build, you can seriously keep a distance in battle. You essentially get +5ft reach to all melee attacks. IвЂ™d be curious to see how effective it is to stack this with ambush builds like the Gloom Stalker. Combined with that Stealth proficiency you get, and you just might be able to take somebody by surprise, so long as your team doesnвЂ™t give you away. So a bit situational, but can start a fight off on the right note. If you catch a surprise on the first round of combat, you get to deal 2d6 extra damage. Surprise Attack is good, but not game-breakingly so.

Sneaky just grants free proficiency in Stealth, which is honestly a pretty good skill to get a free proficiency in. The real defining features are Sneaky, Surprise Attack, and Long-Limbed. You get Darkvision like many other races, and can speak Goblin in addition to Common. Speed is the standard of 30ft and you have Powerful Build, which counts you as one size category higher for weight purposes, so encumbrance should slow you down less. For simplicityвЂ™s sake, we will be avoiding the other races listed in the VoloвЂ™s Guide (things like Tritons and Lizardfolk,) and will be covering only those listed specifically in the вЂњMonstrous AdventurersвЂќ section.Д«ugbear- Their big buff is in Strength, with a smaller one in Dexterity.
